Oregon BEST helps create opportunities for students engaged in cleantech research at Oregon State University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon. These opportunities are open to student-led projects in any of the following Research Areas of Interest:
A limited number of internships are available with our entrepreneurial partners. Key alignment between industry need and student talent has led to strong results. In 2012, Oregon BEST funded an intern position for a Portland State University Graduate Student in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to help Indow research ideal U.S. markets for expansion.
Oregon BEST is piloting an internship program with our portfolio partners in 2014. The pilot program will start by selecting industry projects and then matching these projects with student talent. A successful pilot program could lead to a new full time industry internship program for 2015 and beyond.
Oregon BEST partners with other organizations to host innovation and business plan competitions that are open to student participation. We believe competitions spur creative thinking and can lead to productive partnerships.
In 2013, Oregon BEST and the International Living Future Institute™ hosted the Red List Design Challenge. This competition inspires teams to design original, non-toxic, and ecologically sound building products that meet the demands of the Living Building Challenge™ while using the rich natural resources of Oregon state. The Red List Design Challenge received a great response from student entrants. In fact, the second place winner was a student from the University of Oregon's Product Design Studio.
Also in 2013, students and faculty at Portland State University were invited to participate in the first PSU Cleantech Challenge, a prototype design competition funded through a grant from Wells Fargo. Oregon BEST began partnering with PSU in the competition's execution. In the PSU Cleantech Challenge, selected semi-finalist teams are given 90 days and a stipend to develop working prototypes. These teams show off their projects in September at Oregon BEST FEST, where a grand prize winner is announced. PSU and Oregon BEST have initiated planning for the 2015 competition cycle. Please check back for more details as they become available.
