Sundar obtained his PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Penn State University (1995), following a B.Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1987).
Sundar’s research focuses on the interactions between materials, manufacturing and design in the nano and micro scales. His research has been funded to the tune of over $7 million by federal (NSF, NASA, NIST, DOE, AFRL, ONR, Army), state (PA & OR) and over 40 industry sources. Sundar’s research group has generated over 150 publications, 7 issued and licensed patents, and over 20 intellectual property filings in advanced materials and manufacturing. In the process, he has graduated 6 Ph.D. and 11 M.S. students. He have delivered nearly 100 invited talks and taught over 35 university courses in 4 continents, including graduate courses in powder injection molding in USA, Spain, India and Brazil.
Sundar has led a start-up company and helped establish 8 other new businesses during the last 15 years. Sundar also has over 8 years of experience in evaluating new business and technology proposals worth over $1 billion while serving on scientific advisory panels for the National Academy of Sciences, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
